What is the HelMSIC Alumni Network (HAN)?
Since its creation, HelMSIC has counted a significant number of active members. During their student years, the organization has been and continues to be a reason for creating strong bonds among its members nationwide. The shared vision, adherence to common values, and regular involvement in implementing activities during their studies sparked the formation of an alumni network.
Recognizing the need and desire of alumni to maintain communication among themselves, HelMSIC established the HelMSIC Alumni Network (HAN) in 2018. This network comprises individuals with shared ideas, enthusiasm for collaboration, specific goals, purposes, and a framework for actions decided by the alumni themselves, in cooperation with HelMSIC.
The network aims to enhance communication and maintain relationships among alumni even after completing their studies. Additionally, it supports the organization itself by transmitting the knowledge and experiences of alumni to new, active members.
How to Join HAN?
Alumni of HelMSIC are individuals who held a position at the local or national level or participated in activities in one of the local committees. Based on this, a member of the HelMSIC Alumni Network can be any individual who meets all of the following criteria:
- Is an alumnus or alumna, as defined above
- Held a position at the local or national level
- Has received their degree or completed their studies
- Ceases to be an active member of HelMSIC, if they were still maintaining that status

Alumni Coordinating Team
The coordination of HAN is carried out by a team of HAN members, known as the Alumni Coordinating Team (ACT). The ACT is responsible for communication among the network’s members and with HelMSIC, supporting its activities, creating content, organizing the annual Alumni Meeting, registering new members to HAN, and conducting network activities.
For the term 2024/25, the ACT consists of:

Giorgos Vaiopoulos: Graduate of the Medical School of the University of Athens, Anesthesiology Resident, “Pammakaristos” Hospital, Athens
Gregory Papantoniou: Graduate of the Medical School of the University of Thessaly, Pediatric Resident, Drama General Hospital
Alumni meeting
Each year, HAN members hold the annual Alumni Meeting, which serves as the main opportunity for members to exchange experiences, discuss and reflect on issues of common interest such as working conditions, career and professional development, collaborations in research projects, ethics and deontology, sociomedical issues, and continuing medical education. In addition to educational sessions, administrative sessions are held, the past term’s activities are reviewed, and the new Alumni Coordinating Team (ACT) is elected.

Throughout the year, in collaboration with HelMSIC, HAN members engage in specific activities aimed at personal development and supporting HelMSIC in successfully conducting activities through the experience of HAN.
A key activity of the network is the Mentoring Project, which started in the 2022/23 term. This project creates interactions between Mentors and Mentees to facilitate professional development and address queries.
Mentoring Project
Mentoring for medical students in Greece is often unexplored during their studies and after graduation, relying on informal sources for information about planning their future careers. Consequently, future healthcare professionals struggle to recognize opportunities and career paths that satisfy their interests and align with their skills, knowledge, and personalities. Medicine is now a broad field with new directions continuously gaining ground in the international community.
Within the Mentoring Project framework, interested individuals initially express their interest in participating as Mentors or Mentees. Any HAN member can be a Mentor, while any active HelMSIC member in the 5th or 6th year of studies, as well as any HAN member, can be a Mentee. The ACT matches Mentor & Mentee pairs and coordinates their communications. Each Mentor & Mentee pair then outlines their mentoring plan and collaborates to achieve it.
